This is not a typical post. It’s about a new category appearing on Lylibellule… a category i would have never imagined existing one day on the website. I’s called « Plastic model – Injection kits«
No you’re not dreaming
That doesn’t mean i’ll start to build robots.
In fact it happened to me i wanted to do some kits it’s because 3 models caught my attention at a point i got really exited to try this experience. Wrongdoers are :
ID-3 HoiHoi-san « Heavy battle ver. »
Combat-san
Pest-X-san
The first one is on the road, it’s HoiHoi-san. I can’t wait to receive her. But my problem is that i’m completely clueless about this matter, so there is the time for me to ask for some help.
My questions / Mes questions :
- What stuffs i’ll need to have ? / De quel matériel aurais-je besoin?
- Could you provide me which brand for colors i have to look for, the type of colors who fit this midel-kit and also the colors name or numbers i’ll need for HoiHoi-san ?
On Hobby Search they displayed a picture with the colors to use but it’s fully in japanese so i don’t understand anything.
- And MOST important, where do i can get all this ?
I’ll be deeply thankful if somebody could come to my aid. Even if it’s a first time for me, i don’t want to screw up my little HoiHoi-san. I would be disgusted.
Thanks in advance to anyone who will answer my call.

You’ll need a sharp hobby knife (X-acto or Excel) to cut off the parts from the runners. The parts are mostly pre-colored, so it is not really necessary to paint, but if you want to you can use so-called enamel paint (Humbrol, Model Master, Tamiya to name a few brands). The colors in de picture are by the way (left, from top to bottom): white, orange 9gloves, ribbon), skin color, pink (hair), pink (mouth), orange (USB-port, machine gun trigger); right, from top to bottom: black, orange (handlebar of hammer), dark grey, brown, green and gold.
Enamel paint is cleaned with terpentine or white spirit. When you open the jars/tins you gently have to stir the paint with those wooden sate pens or tooth picks. Use a fine brush when applying the paint. All those things can be bought at hobby shops where they sell model kits, or you can acquire them online.
Hello! Thanks for those details.
I’ll probably go to a shop near my home and if i don’t find what i need, i’ll order online.
Glad to know paint is not mandatory ^^ That’s what i feared the most.
For ID-3 HoiHoi-san « Heavy battle ver. », you actually don’t need any paint for it to look colour-accurate, as almost all of the pieces are moulded in the right colours. The only exception is the handle of the hammer, which is moulded in gray rather than gold. For this part, you can find a can of gold spray paint at a local hobby store.
If you do insist on painting the model completely, you’ll either need an airbrush setup, which is very costly and pretty complicated (I don’t recommend this for a first-timer) or spray paints. However, there is a limited ranged of colours available, so it might be hard to get the exact colours you want.
What I recommend you to get are the following:
A hobby cutter/nipper
Panel line marker(s)
Flat top coat spray
The hobby nipper ranges from around 500 yen to 2000-3000 yen. These are snipping tools used to cut the pieces cleanly from the runner. While it’s certainly nice to have a good nipper, they aren’t the most crucial things in the modelling process. I recommend the cheaper nippers or just use a nail clipper.
The hobby cutter is a straight-edged, scalpel-like tool that is usually used to cut off the excess from the pieces. These range from 500-1500 yen. Personally, I have used exact-o knives commonly found in office supply and art stores. You can also use those retractable and utility knives. The keywords here are « straight » and « sharp »
Panel line markers are crucial for mecha models. And though HoiHoi-san is relatively free of small lines that need detailing, the big machine gun definitely needs some black panel lines to make it not look so flat. For this I recommend the Copic modeler 0.02mm black marker, which is VERY thin and VERY easy to clean up should you make a mistake. I also reocommend the Copic modeler 0.02 mm shadow line marker, which is a very faint gray marker that works wonders on light-coloured pieces such as HoiHoi-san’s hair ornament and the bows on her shoes.
Finally, there’s the top-coat spray. In addition to protecting the paint, decals and panel lines of the model, it also gives the model a certain finish — flat, semi-gloss, or gloss. I recommend flat in the case of HoiHoi-san. By spraying the model with either the MR. TOP COAT (flat) or MR. SUPER CLEAR (flat), you would be able to get rid of that ugly plastic sheen on the model and make HoiHoi-san less toy-like.
Everything I have mentioned above can be found on HLJ. Here’s the page for their hobby tools: http://www.hlj.com/toolpage.html
Type « copic modeler » in the search box for the markers. Of course, these supplies are available through other stores as well. I have shopped often from RainbowTen (http://www.rainbowten.co.jp/english/index.html).
The top coat sprays are a little troublesome, however. I used to buy these online, but due to the enforcement of shipping laws, cans of compressed gasses are no longer allowed to ship outside of Japan (unless in bulk, I believe). I’m not sure if the situation has changed since the last time I checked (which is around 10 months ago). Your best bet is to shop at local hobby stores. I would think any place that specializes in plastic models should carry them.
Hope you find this helpful!
Chag´s last blog ..HG 00 Gundam & 0-Raiser Review
Oops, I looked at the model again and found out that the stock and trigger button of the machine gun are also not in the right colours. If you care enough for these inaccuracies, I recommend Gundam paint markers for these small surfaces. These often require multiple coats (each applied after the previous has dried), but they are pretty cheap.
I also forgot to mention something else — sanding. If you are top-coating the model, I highly recommend you sand the places where the pieces were previously connected to the runner. You can use a nail file, high-grit sandpaper, or one of the cheap hobby files that can be found in stores. They will leave abrasion marks on the plastic, but the top coat is able to cover these up along with other scratches flawlessly.
Chag´s last blog ..HG 00 Gundam & 0-Raiser Review
LooooL Indeed i’m quite careful with details and i’m also punctilious with everything i start. So it’s obvious i will at least paint those small parts. Thanks Chag!
Ok about a lime, i take note.
No way to do a more complete list of advices! A big thanks! I’ll see if eventually i can found all those tools near, i did a few searches and a modeling shop exist at 30 km in my area.
But if i don’t find, i’ll take on HLJ.
Glad to know paint is not mandatory, it was a phobia! ^^ And yet i guessed that painting a figure like this using a paintbrush wasn’t really recommended. And buying an air-brush just for this wouldn’t have been a good investment.
LooooL
I’ve never done this before so I can’t help you out

Come on it’s ok!
Thanks anyway, you’re sweet
Okay, so is she a resin kit? I assume she won’t have the seamlines and all the pegs that stick out like normal kits. I went into building kits just recently and hell have I spent much on the equipment (among what I’ve bought is an airbrush, several colors because I bought bullshit on the first try… oh, I know why I’m about to write a guide.. because there’s still none on the internet). Okay, here’s a quick guide:
An airbrush will give you the best result but I don’t think you want to spend that much on three models. It’s also hard to make recommendations for tools since I don’t know what you can get. I’ll list what I’ve used and what other people have recommended though.
(Sidenote: If you can avoid it, don’t glue pieces together until they are painted… that of course only applies to parts that need no puttying.)
Depending on if there’s stuff to do before painting (pegs you have to cut off), you need a cutter for roughly cutting them off, and abrasives (600, 800, 1200). Work from rough to fine, speaking use the 600 first, then the 800 (on the spot you’ve cut) and use the 1200 going over the whole surface.
Now were about to prime. If you can, drill small holes in places you won’t see in the end and spear them on long toothpicks (or however you call those x_X »). That way you can hold them and spray from every direction (and will make painting easier too).
Get a good primer (don’t know if you kit needs this but it won’t hurt)… I like the Games Workshop Skull White (Spray) if they have Games Workshops around your place. They say the Dupli-color Sandable primer is awesome as well (you can get those at car parts stores… at least in America) but I haven’t gotten around to try some since I have to buy them off ebay (and they don’t sell this one in Germany at ALL). :/ If you can’t find that, maybe you can find the Motip Primer.
Hold the pieces from about 30 cm away and spray lightly. Don’t spray too much at a time. You need just one thin layer to make colors stick to the surface. It doesn’t have to be opaque.
As for colors, I recommend the (again) Games Workshop colors and the Vallejo colors. They have a wide color palette. I’m not in the mood to pick the colors yet, if you’re interested though, drop me a line
If I were you, I’d avoid colors that need special thinners. Water thinnable colors are so much more convenient.
Also, get *good* brushes. I love daVinci brushes, if you can get those.
The number one rule for coloring: thin them. Until it has a texture like milk. It will prevent your colors to have ugly brush marks. If they leave puddles it’s too thin. Don’t be impatient if it’s not opaque with one layer, you have to apply a few until it is.
The last and most satisfying step is to glue the parts together. I haven’t found a good super glue myself yet (unfortunately). Probably any will work if you give it enough time to dry and harden.
Okay, I forgot. If your paint work is precious to you, use a varnish. I have the Lascaux Matt Acrylic Transparent Varnish. Works like a charm. Apply it thinned with water when your paint is dry. I spray it with the airbrush, I would recommend to apply it before gluing without an airbrush.
That’s it for now. You reminded me that I could resume writing the guide. xD *goes off*
Eefi´s last blog ..Mina, Model-Kit Diary
Well that’s what i call a good guide to « Succeed with your resin kit ». It’s kind of you for taking the time writing all this. I’m touched.
And i’ll remember it if ever i decide to start this kind of activity. But this time, it’s not a resin kit at all but just a plastic model. ^^ Sorry
kotobukiya model kits are pre-painted I don’t think you need to paint them .just snap fit all the parts will do:D
all you need is tools to cut the pieces a nail-clipper will do
^^
Thanks for those advices.
I can’t wait to receive it and see what it looks like exactly.
Omg am I seeing this right haha!! Congrats on your new category
For a start, just get a simple side cutter and read this tutorial from Z for what we call straight building(minimal or no paint) The cutters I mentioned can be found there
http://gunpla-inochi.com/tools/
As for things like removing seams, nip marks, etc, don’t get overwhelmed with trying out so many things at a time. Just like what moemoekyun suggested, cut and snap fit will do for a start just to get a feel of your new hobby haha
Best of all have fun!
to complicated mate it’s hoihoi-san not gundam
moemoekyun´s last blog ..very disappointing year (for me)
Well, the hardest part I guess is the face… gundam is a robot so face is not really special, but in figure… it’s a must.
divinelight´s last blog ..Sayonara Solitia
If painting is not mandatory, i suppose that the face won’t be too much of a problem.
That’s why i never dared start resin kit : face and eyes creation. I’m certain to screw them because when it’s about so tiny things to make, i tend to shake. It’s horrible ^^
Thanks for advices and link. I’ll do my best.
I’m very punctilious when i make something and so i’ll do everything so have a final result as good as i can.
Ah, the bug extinguishers-tachi.
It’s a Koto, and I’ve never built any Koto but many of my friends kinda disappointed with its quality (I only buy Bandai kits and his knockoffs in the past).
I guess for the starter you don’t really need to do much thing aside of cutting the parts and snap them together. After your first kit, then maybe you could learn to sand the parts. More dwelve in model kits, you shall know many to be learned before you could pose them on the shelves ^^
divinelight´s last blog ..Sayonara Solitia
I don’t know…. i know absolutely nothing in kits but few photos i could see of a finished HoiHoi on other blogs didn’t gave me the impression it was bad.
I’ll give it a try with those 3 kits… and see if i like it. If it does, i’ll try to improve a bit more.
I don’t know if I’d start a whole new category for it, since there aren’t a whole lot of Hoi Hoi San models, and it’s not a hugely popular series.
In any case, the other commenters have definitely been helpful in giving you good tips, though it’s definitely more on the professional level.
I’ve got a gunpla too, it’s a 144 Stargazer. Honestly, even though it is a simple model to put together, it can get very involving if you want it to have a professional look to it. A LOT of work!

radiant´s last blog ..Gameboy Micro Porn
I added the category because i want to post the progress of my making. I think it’ll be easier to find your way after that on the website.

And then who knows, if i like it, maybe i’ll continue this activity…
What’s certain is that those kits will keep me busy a long time.
Aww, no gunpla :p?
well, the pros’ feedback here is definitely more meaningful than mine, I still don’t know my heads or tails of plamo. All I can say is that I wouldn’t be able to do anything without my design knife (modeling knife, roughly the same thing).
I’m too lazy to topcoat, but do get primer and nippers. Sandpaper along with the design knife is enough for me to clean up.
I guess really though, if you’re only starting off, keep that stuff to a minimum and just use tools lying around the place. Chubbs and mmk said it best.
For now i don’t want to put too much money on it without knowing if i’ll like this activity. But i still want to do a good work because i like when things are done correctly.

the thing is… i cant help since i havent done that before. =/
all the best nevertheless! =)

Te contacterai bientot.
Nice..I always want to get one of these

If you don’t wanna mess this up, maybe you should experiment to paint on something more cheaper, something that you would not regret when things go wrong.
You’re living in europe right? So I guess a paint with the brand « Vallejo » is easy to grab. Vallejo consist of two types, the « model color » for handbrush, and « model air » for airbrush. both provide a wide range of colors

Uwah~! Hoi Hoi-san~! You’re really making me tempted in getting her… >.<
BTW, since it's a Kotobukiya kit, it's advisable to be extra cautious in cutting and assembling it. As their material is… "a bit" brittle, in short, may break if not careful (I've accidentally broke Mr ZenGAR's DaizenGAR kit before this
). And yes, most of its major parts are pre-painted as Moemoe stated but the smaller items like hammer, blade or broom, needed to be painted.

Indeed Chag told me that too. So i’ll only paint those small parts for this first making.

Tu as choisi quel GK pour commencer???
